Pipe relining

Repairing a drain without
opening up a Como block

The trench costs more than the crack on ground like this

The defect itself is usually small: an open joint, a crack, roots that have found a gap of a few millimetres.

What makes excavation expensive here is everything above the pipe. On a block that steps down toward the water, a drainage run is long and indirect, and it typically passes retaining walls, established planting and paving that exists precisely to hold the fall in place.

Digging through that and putting it back properly is most of the cost, and it is cost spent on reinstatement rather than on the repair.

Relining does the repair inside the pipe. One access point, no trench, and the ground that holds your block together is not disturbed to fix a crack in a joint.

Local relining guide

When relining is the right call in Como

The ground above the pipe is the expense

On a block that falls away from the road, the drainage run is long and indirect and set into ground that steps down.

Retaining, planting and paving on that fall are there for a reason, and reinstating them after a trench is most of what an excavation quote actually pays for.

Where the line crosses another property

Some drainage here runs across a downstream property under a registered easement, because gravity to a recognised drain is what Sutherland Shire requires.

Repairing that from the inside avoids excavating land that is not yours, which is a practical advantage as much as a legal one.

Roots take the joint, not the pipe

Bushland-edge blocks give roots plenty to work with, and they enter at an opening rather than through sound pipe.

A liner seals the run end to end, so there is no longer a gap for them to find.

What relining cannot do

It restores the pipe. It does not change the gradient the pipe was laid at.

If a section has lost its fall and holds water, that is excavation and re-lay, and we will say so rather than lining over a problem that will come back.

Why we quote both ways

You should be able to compare. We give the relining figure and the excavation figure for the same defect.

Sometimes digging genuinely is the right answer, usually where access is easy and the run is short. On these blocks it rarely is.

What pipe relining costs in Como

Quoted at a fixed price against footage, never against a description. These are indicative 2026 ranges, and the excavation comparison comes with every relining quote.

01

Camera inspection and report $250 – $450

Footage handed over, with what is actually wrong marked and located.

02

Junction or short section repair $1,500 – $3,500

A defined defect repaired from inside, through existing access where possible.

03

Full run, house to boundary $4,000 – $9,000

Depending on length and access. On a long indirect run this is where relining earns its keep.

04

Root cutting before lining $400 – $700

The line cleared and prepared so the liner cures against sound pipe.

05

Excavation comparison included

The dig price for the same defect, so the choice is yours and not ours.

Roots cut back and the run cleaned so the liner cures against sound pipe rather than over debris.

Step 04

Filmed again afterwards

The finished liner recorded end to end and the footage handed over with the warranty.

Same drain blocking every year?

Then clearing it again is not the answer. Twenty minutes with a camera will show you whether a liner fixes it for good.

Why is relining worth more on a sloping block?

Because excavation costs more here than the defect deserves. A drainage run on a block that falls away from the road is usually long, indirect and set into ground that steps down, frequently past retaining, planting and paving that was built to hold the fall. Opening a trench through that is disruptive out of all proportion to a cracked joint, and reinstating it properly is most of the bill. A liner repairs the pipe and leaves the ground alone.

Will relining fix a drain that has no fall?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. A liner restores the pipe. It cannot change the gradient the pipe was laid at. If the camera shows a section that has lost its fall and is holding water, that is a different repair, and we will tell you which one you have before quoting either.

Does relining help with a stormwater easement problem?

Not directly, and it is worth separating the two. An easement question is about where water is legally allowed to go. Relining is about the condition of a pipe you already have. Where an existing drainage line crosses another property under an easement, relining is often the sensible way to repair it precisely because it does not involve digging up somebody else's land.

How long does it last?

A correctly installed liner is a structural repair rather than a patch, and it is designed to be measured in decades rather than years. We will not put a specific number on a specific drain we have not filmed, because the answer depends on what is left of the host pipe.

Do you have to dig at all?

Usually only a small access point, and frequently we can work through one that already exists. That is the entire point of the method: the repair happens inside the pipe, so the garden, the driveway and any retaining stay where they are.

Can every drain be relined?

Most can. A line that has collapsed completely, or one that has separated so far that there is no host pipe left to line, needs excavation. The camera decides it, which is why we film before quoting rather than after.

What does relining cost in Como?

A camera inspection and report is $250 to $450. A junction or short section repair is $1,500 to $3,500. A full run from the house to the boundary is $4,000 to $9,000 depending on length and access. We give the excavation price alongside it so you can compare rather than take our word for which is better.
